A native of London Ontario, Chief Warrant Officer David Horlick joined the Canadian Forces in September 1984. He began his career at the Canadian Forces Recruit School in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. In 1985 he was posted to Canadian Forces Language School in CFB St-Jean and then to the Canadian Forces Medical Services School (CFMSS) in CFB Borden. Upon completion of the QL3 Medical Assistant's course, he was posted to the base medical clinic in CFB St-Hubert.

In 1988 Chief Warrant Officer Horlick returned to CFMSS were he completed his QL5 training. In 1990 he was promoted to the rank of Master Corporal and was posted to Valcartier with 5 Field Ambulance. In August 1990, CWO Horlick was deployed to St-Benoit, Quebec during the Oka crisis. In 1992 he received his QL6A qualification and was then deployed to Bosnia Herzegovina as part of OP Cavalier in support of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. In 1994 upon receiving his promotion to Sergeant, Chief Warrant Officer Horlick was transferred to the Canadian Forces Recruit School Saint-Jean where he served as an instructor for three years.

In 1997 Chief Warrant Officer Horlick was posted to 5 Field Ambulance in Valcartier and subsequently completed his QL6B Physician Assistants course at the Canadian Forces Medical Services School.

In 1998, he was promoted to Warrant Officer and served as the 5 Field Ambulance Medical Company Sergeant Major. In October 1999 Chief Warrant Officer Horlick was deployed to the Central African Republic were he served as a Physician Assistant as part of Op Prudence. In September 2000, Chief Warrant Officer Horlick was appointed as a member of the Order of Military Merit. In 2001 he was promoted to the rank of Master Warrant Officer and was posted to 3 HSOTU Halifax as the Ambulatory Care Sergeant Major. In October 2002, Chief Warrant Officer Horlick returned to Bosnia Herzegovina as the Health Services Support Sergeant Major for Op Palladium Roto 11. Chief Warrant Officer Horlick was promoted to his present rank in 2005 and was selected as the Regimental Sergeant Major for 5 Field Ambulance. In August 2007 Chief Warrant Officer Horlick deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan as the Health Services Support Unit and 3 Multinational Medical Unit Regimental Sergeant Major as part of OP Athena Roto 4. Chief Warrant Officer Horlick was appointed Canadian Forces Medical Branch Chief Warrant Officer in May 2008, a post he held until July 2011, the date of his appointment to Canadian Forces Chaplain Branch Chief Warrant Officer.
