X-ray Technicians with Halo Traction Patient

Medium: acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 20" x 20"
Date: 2007

Upon my return from Afghanistan in the summer of 2007, X Ray Technicians was the first painting I completed in my Kandahar series. I sketched Mohammed Hussein several times at the Role 3 Hospital - I was fascinated with the halo traction that rendered him immobile. This Afghan civilian fractured his neck as a result of being too close to an Improvised Explosive Devise. He emanated a great sense of calm and the military technicians worked with both sensitivity and intensity whilst preparing their patient for an x-ray. I sought to express this combination of calm and intensity in my painting.
