CANCON

Medium: Digital print on Dibond
Dimensions: 48" x 32"
Date: 2007

This is an unaltered image that depicts the Canadian Forces control centre, called CANCON, taken at night….I arrived in Cairo, Egypt on June 3, 2008. Officers with the Canadian contingent met me at my hotel and we drove the 4-hour journey to El Gorah in Northern Sinai early in the morning on June 4, 2008… El Gorah is located in northeastern Sinai, in Egypt. The area is sparsely populated by nomads and by farmers who tend small orchards. It is basically a desert location, very few trees, rocky, sandy and bleak… I have little interest in the arms and machines of war, my intention all along was to simply document the daily lives of Canadians who serve with the Canadian Forces. To witness and reflect on the lives they lead when serving abroad and the conditions under which they perform their duties.
