Sleeping in a LAV

Medium: Oil and acrylic on plywood panel
Dimensions: 45" x 60"
Date: 2007

A primary investigation in my CFAP project is the depiction, in equal parts, of heroism and banality in combat soldiering. In this case, two soldiers from India Coy. of 2 RCR are shown sleeping in the back of a Light Armoured Vehicle during a exercise prior to their deployment to Afghanistan.

While this piece emphasizes the long periods of boredom that accompany soldiering, it concurrently insists upon assumed heroism via the soldier’s clothing and equipment as well as the viewer’s knowledge of Canada’s current Afghan mission. As a former infantry soldier I am also interested in how this image, if painted 10 years ago, would be read much differently, would lack the mortal associations now colouring our perceptions of soldiering for Canada.
