This Regular Force regiment originated in Valcartier, Québec on 17 June 1977, when '5e Régiment du génie de combat' was authorized to be formed.1 It was redesignated in English, '5 Combat Engineer Regiment' on 1 March 1979.2


5 Combat Engineer Regiment's date of origin is not traced to the formation date of '5e Escadron du génie du Canada' (see below) as lineage is traced from the formation of unit, not sub-unit, sized organizations, ie. regiments and battalions.

5e Escadron du génie de Campagne originated in Valcartier, Québec on 1 July 1968, when '5e Escadron du génie du Canada' was authorized to be formed.4 It was redesignated 5e Escadron du génie de Campagne on 27 June 1973.5 The squadron was reorganized as a regiment and designated '5e Régiment du génie de combat' on 17 June 1977, as above.
