The memorial unveiled in 2001 was erected by the Lisgar Alumni Association. The plaque is dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant Alexis Hannum Helmer.

KILLED IN ACTION MAY 9, 1915, AGE 22,
AT THE SECOND BATTLE OF YPRES, BELGIUM
HE WAS THE FIRST LISGAR GRADUATE
TO DIE IN WORLD WAR I.
HIS DEATH INSPIRED HIS CLOSE FRIEND
LIEUT. COLONEL DR. JOHN McCRAE
TO COMPOSE THIS IMMORTAL POEM.
