In 1980, Colonel Gilles W. Dufour joined the Canadian Forces as an officer cadet in the Regular Officer Training Plan and attended both Collège militaire royal de Saint-Jean and Royal Military College in Kingston. In 1985, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Physics.

Upon completion of his communications and electronics training at CFB Kingston, he was posted to CFS Beaverlodge in Northern Alberta, which formed part of the CADIN-Pinetree Line and served as the Technical Maintenance Officer and System Standards and Training Officer. Following the closing of the radar station in 1988, he was transferred to CFB Suffield as the Detachment Commander of 743 Communication Squadron Detachment Suffield and the Base Telecommunications Officer.

In 1990, Colonel Dufour was assigned as the Executive Assistant and Aide-de-Camp to the Commander, Canadian Forces Communication Command. Upon promotion to major, he was assigned to the Directorate Communications-Electronics Security where he served as the Strategic Requirements Officer.

In 1995, Colonel Dufour was appointed as Commanding Officer of 740 Communication Squadron Esquimalt and 741 Reserve Communication Squadron Victoria. Upon disbandment of 740 Communication Squadron, he was assigned as the Operations Officer of the CFB Esquimalt Base Information Services Branch and was responsible for the operation of all strategic communications to and from deployed ships and all shore establishments as well as the operation of local information systems.

In July 2000, upon completion of the Command and Staff College Course, Colonel Dufour was posted to the Canadian Component-NATO Airborne Early Warning Force as the Commanding Officer of the Technical Element and Chief of the Task Management Office in the Information Technology Wing of the E-3A Component Geilenkirchen.

In July 2005, Colonel Dufour assumed the responsibility of Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. In September 2007, he deployed to the NATO International Security Assistance Force Headquarters (ISAF HQ) in Kabul, Afghanistan as an Information Operations officer.

He was promoted to his current rank in May 2008 and assumed the responsibilities of Director Information Management Service Transformation and Alignment. On 2 September 2009 he was also appointed the Communications and Electronics Branch Advisor.
