Captain(N) Bob Auchterlonie was born in Cumberland, British Columbia in 1969. He entered the Canadian Forces in 1987 as an ROTP cadet and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1991 with a BA in Economics and as Captain of the Varsity Hockey Team.

Capt(N) Auchterlonie completed his Maritime Surface Classification training in 1992 and joined the Pacific Fleet as a junior officer in HMCS Mackenzie and HMCS Yukon. After qualifying as a bridge watch-keeper, Capt(N) Auchterlonie specialized in navigation. On completion of the Destroyer Navigating Officer course in 1994, he was promoted to Lieutenant (Navy) and between 1994 and 1998; he was the Navigating Officer of HMCS Cowichan and HMCS Regina. Capt(N) Auchterlonie attended the year long Operations Room Officer Course in Halifax in 1998 and was posted back to the Pacific Fleet as Weapons Officer and subsequently Combat Officer of HMCS Calgary. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1999.

Capt(N) Auchterlonie was appointed as the Combat Officer of Sea Training Pacific in June 2001 through July 2003 where he planned and conducted the Work Ups for Pacific and Atlantic Fleet Units participating in Operations in the Arabian Sea. He was selected to attend the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in Toronto in the summer of 2003. On completion of Staff College, Capt(N) Auchterlonie was appointed to the Directorate of Maritime Strategy at NDHQ Ottawa in 2004. He was promoted to Commander and joined the Atlantic Fleet as Executive Officer of HMCS Preserver in May 2005 where he served until assuming Command of HMCS Fredericton in June 2007. Capt(N) Auchterlonie has the honour to be the ninth Captain of Fredericton and was fortunate to serve in her from the Equator to the Arctic Circle.

Upon relinquishing Command in 2009, Capt(N) Auchterlonie was selected to attend the year long Naval Command College at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Promoted to his current rank in January 2010, he returned to Ottawa in July 2010 and was appointed Director Defence Force Planning for the Chief of Programme at NDHQ. Capt(N) Auchterlonie returned to the West Coast after far too many winters in Eastern Canada and assumed Command of CFB Esquimalt in July 2012.

Capt(N) Auchterlonie is a graduate of the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College, the Naval Command College at the US Naval War College and has completed a Masters Degree in Defence Studies (MDS) at the Royal Military College of Canada. Capt(N) Auchterlonie spends most of his free time with his family at the arena, on the golf course or on his much smaller boat.
